Walk in Love

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭

While choosing the verse this week, what out to me out of the Scripture were the words “walk in the way of love.”

Last week we read about loving God and how to put Him first. Doing this seems like the first step towards walking in love as the Spirit changes us from within when we are focused on loving God. But what are other ways we can walk in love and be a walking testimony of the God we follow?

The verse directs us to Jesus, to His love and sacrifice (“just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us”). Those familiar words “What Would Jesus Do?” come to mind. Employing this phrase throughout our day and in our interactions with others gives us the pause we need in all circumstances to choose the loving path.

In joyful moments, it reminds us to praise God or say a prayer of gratitude . In strenuous circumstances, it helps us choose the path of love instead of knee-jerk reactions rooted in emotions. Regularly reflecting on Jesus’ life example of love fuels our ability to mimic Him which in turn allows us to walk in obedience to God (another way to show our love for Him).

Walking in the way of love is also imitating Jesus’ day to day responses to others. Love is responding to others with kindness, patience, humility, and truth (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). It’s speaking in a kind tone, showing grace when we’ve nearly run out of patience, letting go of the small things that irritate us (pet peeves), listening to that colleague we typically avoid, etc.

There are many things we can do to “walk in the way of love.” And many times it’s more of a conscious effort than a natural reaction. Choosing this path in obedience and love; however, displays our love for Jesus and is a light to others.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Jesus’ life of love and His loving sacrifice. Help me to follow His example that I may walk in the way of love honoring Him and sharing Your glory with others.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
